Closing Hymn “That Easter Day”

PNCC Hymnal 136, verses 1, 4, & 5

That Easter Day with joy was bright,

The sun shone out with fairer light,

When to their longing eyes restored,

The apostles saw their risen Lord.

O Lord of all with us abide,

In this our joyful Eastertide;

From ev’ry weapon on death can wield;

Thine own redeemed for ever shield.

All praise, O risen Lord we give,

To Thee Who dead, again does live;

To God the Father equal praise

And God the Holy Ghost we raise.

           FIFTH SUNDAY

            OF EASTER

First Reading: Acts 6: 1-7
Responsorial:  Psalm 33
Second Reading: 1 Peter 2: 4-9
Gospel: John 14: 1-12

KEY VERSE: “ I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.”

                                                                                     John 12: 6

READING: Today’s readings can perhaps make us think a little about how we form part of this spiritual house, the Church, as we journey to the Father. Our first reading from Acts show us the tremendous response of the Apostles in growth and a glimpse of Holy Orders. Peter in the second reading again reminds us that baptism builds us into a spiritual house with Jesus as our cornerstone. The mystery of the Church is clearly before us today: the Church is the community of those baptized in Christ, the pilgrim people walking with Christ (who has shown us the Father) to the place he has prepared for us as the Gospel relates

REFLECTING: We continue to explore the meaning of baptism, of membership of the Church, of living a life which has been immersed in the life and death of Jesus Christ: in other words, we continue our “Mystagogy” - our training in the mystery of Baptism and the other Sacraments. We hear more about who Jesus is, with another I am statement: “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life”. We are baptized into his way, his truth and his life. We hear about the earliest community struggling with the life they are called to by baptism, and Peter again reminds us that baptism builds us into a spiritual house’ with Jesus as our cornerstone.

PRAYING:  Father, show me the way, the truth and the life.
