Christ Has Ascended!  Christ Has Ascended Indeed!

Processional Hymn “As Our Savior Enters Heaven”                                          PNCC Hymnal 139, verse 1, 2, & 3

Christ the Lord ascends to heaven, let the faithful now be joyous,

Happily, we sing to our God, deserved glory we give Him,

Alleluia, Alleluia

Christ our Lord this day has entered, His kingdom of heaven on high,

Seated beside God the Father, He reigns with Him there co-equal,

Alleluia, Alleluia.

He prepares a place in heaven, He wants all to be there with Him,

Hence, let us joyfully sing now, Glory to God let us give now,

Alleluia, Alleluia.

Closing Hymn:  “Lord You Give the Great Commission”

CC Hymnal 267 verses 1,2,3, & 5

Lord, you give the great commission: "Heal the sick and preach the word." Lest the Church neglect its mission and the Gospel go unheard, help us witness to your purpose with renewed integrity;
with the Spirit's gifts empower us for the work of ministry.

Lord, you call us to your service: "In my name baptize and teach."
That the world may trust your promise, life abundant meant for each, give us all new fervor, draw us closer in community;
with the Spirit's gifts empower us for the work of ministry.

Lord, you make the common holy: "This my body, this my blood."
Let your priests, for earth's true glory, daily lift life heavenward,
asking that world around us share your children's liberty;
with the Spirit's gifts empower us for the work of ministry.

Lord, you bless with words assuring: "I am with you to the end."
Faith and hope and love restoring, may we serve as you intend,
and, amid the cares that claim us, hold in mind eternity;
with the Spirit's gifts empower us for the work of ministry.

Keep in your mercy those men and women who have died in the cause of freedom and bring them safely into your kingdom of justice and peace. We ask this though Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

First Reading: Acts 1: 1-11
Responsorial:  Psalm 47
Second Reading: Ephesians 1: 17-23
Gospel: Matthew 28: 16-20

KEY VERSE: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me

                                                                                              Matthew 28: 18

READING: This passage of Acts describes for us in greater detail Jesus’ ascension and the bewilderment of the disciples who were gazing into the heavens.  Within this passage is the reminder of the promised Holy Spirit who will empower the disciples to bear witness to Jesus. The genre of the Ephesian passage is that of a thanksgiving prayer offered by Paul to God on behalf of the Ephesians for their steadfast faith in Christ and charity toward their neighbors.  The final chapter of Matthew’s Gospel relates a mention of promise and commission to the disciples upon His Ascension. The Gospel ends where it began in Jerusalem when the disciples returned to wait.

REFLECTING: Ascension is not just a feast that happens to fall in Eastertide: it is an integral part of the Easter mystery. Remember the Lord’s words at the Last Supper: “I am going to prepare a place for, and after I have gone and prepared you a place, I shall return to take you with me.” The resurrection presumes the Lord’s return to the Father. This is therefore a feast of hope: our hope in the Lord’s return, as he went. Our hope that he will take us with him, when our bodies are raised as his was. Our hope that we will take our place in heaven, where he sits on the Fathers right.

PRAYING:  Father, as our Lord ascends to heaven and has given us instructions to continue the mission to bring all people to Him, grant us the spirit of knowledge and wisdom to proceed as His disciples when we encounter those who disbelieve.

Men of Galilee,” (the angels said), “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” Acts 1: 11
